These records deal with the discovery of the dinosaur Diplodocus carnegii in Wyoming in 1899 and its shipment to the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. Much of the correspondence is between the Museum's director, William J. Holland and the field collectors William H. Reed and Jacob L. Wortman. Arthur S. Coggeshall and Olaf A. Peterson, other Carnegie employees, are mentioned for their involvement in the fieldwork. Correspondence between Stephen W. Downey, the County and Prosecuting Attorney for Albany County, Laramie, Wyoming Otto Gramm, President of the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees and William J. Holland discusses the ownership of the land on which the dinosaur was discovered. Mining claims and survey drawings for the land are included in the collection. Free shipment of the fossil to Pittsburgh was negotiated with the Union Pacific Railroad.
