Vernal, Utah, Aug. 23, 1909 Mr. Douglass [sic] Stewart Carnegie Museum Pittsburgh, Pa. My dear Stewart, I enclose my statement of expenditures to August 1. I was delayed on account of my leaving my trunk at Mack and a letter from Dr. Holland causing me to change my plans and not return. I will send my report for Aug. in a few days. I am settled here undoubtedly for the rest of the season. I have discovered a huge Dinosaur, Brontosaurus, and if the skeleton is as perfect as the portions we have exposed the task of excavating will be enormous and will cost a lot of money, but the rock is the kind to get perfect bones and excellent to ship in. I shall send you a letter to be forwarded to Dr. Holland. I do not know just what arrangements he made with regard to money but it will cost probably several times what it would have cost if I had collected in the Wasatch. Until I hear from you or the doctor I will work two men and a team. I could work about 5 or 6 men besides myself to advantage and then it would be necessary to have a cook, another tent &c. In my opinion the most economical thing to do would be to get the thing out as soon as possible rather than drag it along through another season. If there is a whole skeleton as there appears to be a good prospect of there being it may take all next summer anyway. But I want you to read Dr. Hollands letter before you send it to him and tell me at once what you will do about the matter or what you will do until you hear from him. If it should continue as it has begun it would be the best Jurassic Dinosaur in existence but we can judge only by present indications. Anyway it probably will not pay for two men to dally along with it. I have hired one man and team and shall get another as soon as possible. Yours in haste, Earl Douglass Jensen, Utah
