I will ask you though to deposit say $75 of the $300 when you get this, for these reasons:

(1) I probably will have to let one man go and will want to pay him for the part of the month.

(2) You say you deposited $300 instead of the $325 I requested -- about May 1 -- so there would not be quite enough there to meet checks drawn.

(3) Two of us are expecting to go down to the supposed Titanothere Quarry next week and will need a few dollars.

Though this arrangement will not provide sufficient funds to keep four men going we had just arrived at a stage where we can get along nicely with three, for awhile at least. In the past we have needed all the men to keep the work going to the best advantage. But I like this method better as I know what to depend upon and can cut the garment to the cloth. I tried to have such an arrangement before I came out as the uncertainty causes worry and unpleasantness all around.
