in spite of the fact that all of our men have had an epidemic that the doctor thinks is a phase of the Flu. We have not had to go to bed but we have felt very much like it. The main symptoms are throat terrible cough, weakness, and loss of energy. We have kept on working. It evidently is not severe but "lasting". I have been doing some geological work outside for oil companies. The remuneration, of course, is several times what I get here. I remit my salary for the time I am away. It helps me toward getting out of the financial strait these times have placed me in, and at this time it is a help to the museum as the allowance is not enough to push the work as it ought to be pushed and purchase the things necessary to carry on the work. I can help out when I am needed, and have a general watch care over the quarry etc. I go out in autos and can return at almost any time. I do not intend to be away more than a week or so at a time. I was caught out by high water a few days ago. This is why I cashed most of deposit, as I had a chance to send it with men. Another reason I have advanced money to keep things going smoothly. I have been forced to do something outside for the reasons mentioned above and for the sake of the health of Mrs. Douglass and my sister who much need a change. I feel that I have a set of good faithful men here. Financial Conditions are desperate here. There seems little money for anything but for the exploration and development of oil prospects.
