October 17, 1922 Mr. Earl Douglass Your letter of October 9th has just been received and I am sending you a night letter via Vernal, in order to make matters clear to you. You have evidently understood my former letter in which I said I wanted the expenses kept down and that I did not wish you to incur expenses without letting me know beforehand. What I want you to realize is that I want to have the situation clear before me, aned not have you write a short not aksing me to deposit $100 or $200 in addition to the regular amount, without me knowing what it is for. What I wish now is that you will keep a full force, if necessary, of men going at the quarrry. Take out the small Dinosaurs, the Stegosaurus, and of course the skull you have mentioned. Prepare these for shipment and endeavor to have everything cleaned up and ready for shipment about January 1, 1923. In regard to the two skeletons of Diplodocus, as I wrote you before, I will take thsi matter up with Secretary Walcott of the Smithsonian Institution and endeavor to find out what disposition he thinks shouild be made of them, and also what future disposition the Government intends to make of the quarry. I realize the fact that to clean up this work you will need more than $300 a month, and you will see by my last letter to you that I asked you if you did not wish me to deposit a sum sufficient to pay off your outstanding debts. I did not wish you to understand that the work had to be stopped unitl you had accumlated a sufficient amount of money to clear up these debts.
