My dear Douglass: At the request of Mr. Peterson, and in compliance with your letter to him of April the nineteenth, I was very happy to take up the question of a pension being granted you by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching with Mr. Sammuel Harden Church, the President of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute. I am very much disappointed, however, to have to inform you that you request does not comply with the rules fo the Foundation, as you will see form the attached copy of its rely to Mr. Church's letter on your behalf. I enclose also a copy of Mr. Church's letter to me which may be of interest to you. It is most unfortunate that a sum could not be allowed you after so many years of service at this institution, but I am sur ethat every possible consideration has been extended under the circumstance.
